    uhp trooper at little mtn

The Cat 4s have been a little notorious this year for crossing the yellow line, but this was not the case at all on saturday at the Little Mountain race. Everybody did a great job staying inside the yellow line. In fact, the most dangerous threat to our group was the UHP motorcycle trooper who just about t-boned our group, then a lap later rode against traffic on our side of a double yellow line to try to force us to to the shoulder. I heard complaints from other groups that this trooper had aggressively disrupted their races as well.

I'm interested in filing a formal complaint with the UHP regarding this trooper, but want to make sure i've got my facts straight. i tried to contact the race director, Kevin R., but the email address listed on the race flier keeps getting bounced back. Can anyone fill me in, or point me in the direction of where i can find the laws/regulations regarding road races under a UDOT permit (or help me get in contact with Kevin).  I know under regular Utah bicycle laws there is a "two abreast" law, but does this apply to races with a UDOT permit as well?

Likewise, if you had an experience with this trooper you would like to include in the compalint, or happened to catch his license plate no. or other identifying information (there were two motorcycle troopers, but it was the younger one without the grey mustache that seemed to be most aggressively putting cyclists at risk), please email me individually.

     thanks,  matt b.

He was on a motorcycle, but he was not a trooper.  His insignia said "Sheriff", which means you should probably call him a deputy.  You should probably complain to:

    Sheriff's Office
    1225 West Valley View
    Suite 200
    Logan, UT   84321
    435-750-7400

I thought he was being a jerk also, but since he had a badge, and a gun, and handcuffs, it was probably best to do exactly what he said.  Under no circumstance should any of us have talked back to him.  I heard a couple of the folks up front yell back at this deputy, which in my opinion could have provoked him into shutting down our ride.  Don't ever argue with a cop.  It's a really bad idea.  Maybe he saw the photos of the car crashing head on into a race in Texas and thought he was doing us a big favor.

For future reference, maybe the race promotors should clear this kind of thing up with the Sheriffs department.
